On the road again

7/12 - Monday - We enjoyed Pagosa. Didn't do the hot springs but did take a day trip up to the Continental Divide at Wolf Pass. I forget the elevation but it's HIGH. The hike we did was just over an hour but it was a thrill. The views from the "top of the world" in this area are spectacular. The wild flowers are just beginning to bloom and small patches of SNOW is hanging on. Corky is quiet when he hikes. I sing and talk and anything else I can do to make noise. I know the bears are watching!
Broke camp in Pagosa and moved on up higher over Wolf Pass to Fun Valley Family Resort on the river near the town of South Fork. Fun Valley is a HUGE RV park - over 400 campsites spread along the valley; all pretty close together. They offer so many things to do that a family on vacation wouldn't have to leave the park. There's horseback riding, fly fishing, min golf, paddle boats, game rooms, dining halls and dance halls. We just stayed 3 nites for the "experience". Oddly enough this is a park we looked into a for a summer job a few years ago.

While in the area we took a scenic rail open motor car up even higher in the mountains along a portion of the original railway from the 1800's. The "Silver Streak" is a 4-wheel rail vehicle originally used to move workmen along the rail line. Along the river we could see the old stagecoach trail; very rugged and narrow. The ride is along the upper Rio Grande River. Up here the river is clear and fast moving on its way to the lower Texas valley. It took the man who owns the rail line over 8 years to clear the rail line and repair track before opening for business.

Corky & I did enjoy the western dances at the park. It's been awhile since we Texas two-stepped, and did the Cotton Eyed Joe!
7/15 - Thurs. - On to Gunnison, CO. We'll stay in this area for a few weeks. It's not only familiar to us, there's lots to do in the way of day trips, and, we are close to Mt. Crested Butte (CB). The first nite here we went to see Tersa & Dan; sat out by the fire pit and watched the stars pop out. Dan is a great guy and Tersa is happy.
We like the little town of "Gunni". Sure wish we had brought our bikes. Our park here is the Tall Texan, quiet and nice. Funny thing, most here are from TX & OK. In fact, met a man who retired from Rowan, the company James is with. He worked with Gayle Burr. Small World.
Kurt & Joy & family came up for their vacation & are staying in Mt. CB. Lorri & Scooter and kids will be in next week. Scott & E Rose are coming up for a couple of days too. Wish all our family could be here. Maybe next summer? This park has cabins to rent & is a block from the put-in at the river for rafts & kayaks.
We will say here a week then go up to Mt. CB & "dry camp" awhile on a parking lot. Then -- who knows? Love to all

July 8 - Thurs. Outside of Pagosa Springs, CO.
We've moved our "camp" on into Colorado. Pagosa has the worlds largest and deepest hot mineral spring with indoor and outdoor pools. We may get to do a "soak" before we leave the area.
Yesterday we drove up to Wolf Creek Pass; saw the ski area and then onto an 1800's mining town, Creede, sight of old silver mines. Nowdays its looks like a miniature Eureka Springs and very dependent on tourism.
Today was a "WONDERFUL" 2 1/2 hour hike to Chimney Rock Archaeological area, a few miles from our RV camp. Tours are only with a guide as "digs" are ongoing. Got some good photos and learned more about the Puebloan people and their home 1000 years ago. Thank God I had my ocotillo hiking stick and Corky to drag me up the rugged trail. Next hike I need to remember a hat and more water!
Corky is working on the RV this afternoon. We have one "slide out" that doesn't want to operate properly and he's made lots of trips to Ace Hardware in town for "nuts and bolts".
We have a few more days here before going on. It's always my pleasure to visit with others on these adventures and to see the beautiful world the Lord gave us to take care of.
More later.

July 4, 2010

Sunday - July 4 - A quiet morning in Chama, New Mexico. We went to early Mass at the small church here. Thanks God for all our blessings! Then into town (all of a few blocks) to breakfast. A little cafe with two guys making special order omlettes. Corky & I had ours with NM green sauce. Really good. Today the RV park is holding a 4th celebration pot luck. The town has a fireworks show tonight. Should be a crowd. We hear the whole county comes.
The elevation here is 8000+ feet so the mornings are very cool. It warms up quickly to the high 70s.
Yesterday we drove the route the Cumbres & Toltec train normally takes from here to Antonito, CO. This is the 40th year for the tourist train; a narrow gauge that's been in use since the 1890's. Unfortunately the train isn't operating right now. A trestle was damaged by a "suspicious" fire a few miles from here last week and all operation from this end has stopped until repairs are done. The drive was beautiful - up to 10,000+ feet of beautiful scenery.
Tuesday we head on to "somewhere" in Colorado. - planning to find places we haven't seen yet.
"The journey is it's own reward" Love to all.

July 1

July 1 - Thurs. (Carla's Birthday)
Today was interesting. After learning the Dodge needed a new clutch and would be in the shop, we were on our feet for transportation. So - we walked to town (Tucumcari,NM) along the Mother Road (Route 66). Not much going on. The town survives on the Interstate and their claim to fame, being Route 66. We saw a tour bus stopped at a TeePee souvineer shop. I asked a lady. Where are "yall" from? She said England. The tour started in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles, which is where Route 66 started and ended.
Tucumcari dosn't have a Wal-Mart. I'm told it was rejected by the locals. Not everyone agrees on whether this was a good decision. We visited the Museum for 2 hours. It's amazing to me what small towns have in their museums. The history of this area is so recent as far as history goes. The Spanish, Indians, Civil War,Comancheros, large ranch owners.
We ate lunch at a restaurant that's been in business since 1965. Also, we walked 5 miles today.
